It all begins with magic...
Mortal Coil is a supernatural role-playing game. It begins when all of the players create a unique world of fantasy, with magic powerful or subtle depending on the group's desires. You create characters to explore this world, their magic and passion shaping the stories which spring forth from your mind. You decide if you tell a tale of dark supernatural horror, of wise fools and giants, of the secret wars between sorcerous cabals, or of inhuman politics among beings that can never die.
...and ends with power tokens.
At the start of a game of Mortal Coil the GM and players create a Theme document that defines the play setting and world. It's a magical world. How much magic is determined by you the players. However, the effects of the supernatural are not specifically defined by the rules. They are defined by the GM and players during theme and character creation and during play. Who your characters are will become apparent during theme creation. All characters have one thing in common, they are driven by the Passions of duty, fear, hate and love.
Mortal Coil features a diceless system that uses tokens for conflict resolution. No more bad luck or critical rolls. When faced with a situation you need to overcome you decide how hard your character will try to overcome it. Your Passions reinforce your actions. Tension is maintained during conflict as you don't know how much you opponent is willing to risk to win.
